Wheat Grass Bundles for Fall

Fall is just around the corner  (even though this week summer is ablaze and the heat has been unbearable) so you can imagine how much I am looking forward to things cooling down a little bit and the changing of the seasons.

In  honor of this imminent change, I decided to create some fall Look for Less DIYs  in hopes to inspire you with some ideas for the upcoming cooler weather.

I saw these wheat grass bundles for fall on Ballard Design’s website and I really liked how simple yet striking they looked. And while they weren’t really that expensive compared to other items I have recreated from their site, I figured I could do it for even less.

I happened to come across this wheat stack in the dried floral section at Hobby Lobby and lucky for me it was $7.99 with 40% off that week. I only purchased one in hopes that I could make 2 bundles out of the one stash.

I laid them all out and began to neatly make my first bundle, pulling each piece of grass one by one from the larger bundle and making sure that all of the tops were in line and even with one another.

When I felt I had enough, I cut off the ends. I was making the smaller one here so this is why I took off so much from the bottom. These garden sheers work great for cuts like this.

Then, in order to make my bundles stand up on their own, I needed to make the stalks a little more bulky. So, I took the stems that I cut off and and cut them down further. I needed them to go inside of the bundle but I didn’t want them to be noticeable so I cut them so that the tops were hidden by the wheat grass section of each stem.

I placed them on top of the stems as shown below…

And then I wrapped them up so that you would not see them.

Then, I held them tightly together and with a rubber band secured all of the pieces in place so that they wouldn’t budge.

At this point, if I needed more bulk I would add more stems individually from the bottom. Once I was happy, I took my shears and began to even out the bottoms of the stems so that the bundle would stand up nicely.

From here you can use some jute or twine to wrap the bundle and hide the rubber band, or in my case, I used the same green ribbon that I used for my pinecone wreath since I still had some left over.

I repeated this entire process for the larger bundle using up the rest of the stems. And here is how they turned out!

I really do love how simple they are, yet how representative they are of the fall season.

Plus, the fact that these are so easy to make, anyone can try these out, no matter how much of an inexperienced crafter you are. In addition, if your budget is particularly tight this year (I mean whose isn’t with the prices of everything being at an all time high) you can still manage a new DIY.

Here is how much we saved…

For both of the higher end pieces, I would have had to pay $43.20, but for my versions I only spent $4.79 since I only needed to buy the one wheat bundle and it was on sale. That is a $38.41 savings and I get to enjoy the same high end look!

That is a great deal in my book.

I hope you are having a great day and I will see you in the next one.

Until then… adios!
